What's PKU

Also a lot of you have asked about our PKU temp tattoos and what pku is. Well I got this great explanation from the lovely Jolanda from PKUtree

Phenylketonuria - commonly known as PKU - is a rare condition affecting around one in 13,000 babies in Australia.

PKU prevents the body from breaking down the amino acid Phenylalanine (PHE) which is found in protein. This PHE builds up in the blood becoming toxic to the brain and can lead to mental retardation and behavioural problems.

Fortunately all newborns in Australia are now screened for PKU. Infants who test positive are fed with a phenylalanine-free infant formula and put on a life-long, strict low-protein diet which excludes protein rich foods like meat, dairy products, eggs, nuts, legumes, wheat/bread. This diet and protein supplement is the only treatment currently available to people with PKU but it allows the phe levels in the blood to be controlled and prevent damage to the brain.

So that's some interesting info, I'm sure that there is a lot of you out there that didn't
know this condition even existed, I didn't until early this year.
My friends daughter has it, she's a beautiful little girl.
